The Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Motto

Master Fu Sheng-yuan always emphasized the importance of the four principles of Zhin, Hen, Li and Zhen in the development of Tai Chi Chuan.

Zhin – Diligence

Hard work and effort is a prerequisite for skilled development. Daily practice on a regular basis will ultimately be rewarded by beneficial results.

Hen – Perseverance

It is important that a long enduring sense of purpose should be cultivated. A sense of purpose combined with regular daily practice will serve to achieve that purpose.

Li – Respect

Respect for your master, teacher and fellow man is paramount. Deal with others taking into consideration their backgrounds in light of their expectations. Mutual respect serves to enhance a sense of community and solidarity in a society where individuals treat each other with respect.

Zhen – Sincerity

Sincerity in attitude or motivation is a prerequisite for learning Tai Chi Chuan. In order to achieve, a genuine resolve to pursue your goal must exist. Deal with others sincerely if you wish them to reciprocate.  Maintain sincerity in the fore of your dealings with others and you will achieve a smooth flow in relationships.

Class conduct and etiquette

  • As a courtesy, please inform your instructor when you will be absent from class. A text message or email is sufficient.
  • Note that bowing or saluting when entering and leaving the training space is acceptable and not mandatory.
  • When you come late to class, please enter quietly and join the class wherever there is a space, or at the rear.
  • When your mobile phone needs to be on, please put the volume on low and take any essential calls outside or off camera.
  • When your instructor invites questions, please ask clarifying questions that will assist you with what is being learned in the session, and which will enhance the integrity of your practice.
  • Assist all participants to stay focused on the practice by confining social conversation to breaks or the end of class.
  • Above all, avoid comparing yourself with others, or looking for right and wrong. Patience and non-judgmental attention to your own individual process will bring you the progress that you seek.
